A friend of mine moved to another state last year. She was appalled at the schools and is now homeschooling her three kids.
In her recent letter, this line stood out: "The school the boys attended is supposed to be the best, but only at test taking, we found."
She told of science, art, and p.e. classes being cut, and no counselors on staff. She said, "There is so much pressure on the teachers to get their children to perform well on standardized tests that memorization has taken the place of real learning. And what they are being tested on seems of little consequence to me. Why are we not nourishing their minds? I am sick over it."
Yes, that's what the emphasis on test-taking does; it makes schools lose sight of the real reason for education: nourishing minds.
